Early Life, Family and Education

Daniel Caesar was born in Scarborough, Ontario, and raised in nearby Oshawa. His father, Norwill, is from Jamaica (he was twice runner-up in the Mr. Jamaica competition) and his mother, Hollace, is from Barbados. (See also Caribbean Canadians.)

Caesar is one of four siblings and was raised in the Seventh Day Adventist faith. His family was a part of Oshawa’s sizable, tight-knit Adventist community. He has described his household as extremely religious and said his parents worshipped daily. The family home was located next door to their church, where his father sang in the gospel choir. Norwill also contributed to some gospel recordings. However, he had a bad experience in the music industry, which led him to be cynical of his son’s early success.

Caesar was interested in music from a young age. He has recalled that his first performance was singing “Come, Thou Fount” at a Sabbath service at the age of eight. Caesar’s parents didn’t approve of most popular music, so he listened to a lot of urban gospel growing up. He kept his growing interest in other forms of music like funk, R&B and rock a secret. Albums with parental warning labels were contraband in his household, and his parents almost exclusively listened to gospel music. Caesar wrote his first song, about a girl he had a crush on, in grade eight. He also recorded a song with his father at the age of 16.

Daniel Caesar attended Kingsway College, a private school run by the Adventist Church. It was there that he began to rebel against his strict and conservative upbringing. When he was 16, he was expelled from Kingsway for selling a small amount of marijuana to a classmate. As punishment, his parents told him he could not attend any high school graduation parties. After he defied them, he returned home to find his belongings waiting for him in garbage bags. The 17-year-old spent the rest of the summer staying with a friend before making his way to Toronto. He found work washing dishes at high-end restaurants but was not making enough to rent an apartment and had nowhere to stay. Most of the time he was able to find couches to sleep on in the homes of friends in Toronto, but not always. Caesar was effectively homeless. During that time, he occasionally slept on a park bench in Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park.

Early EPs

Daniel Caesar’s first recording was the EP Praise Break (2014), produced by Grammy-nominated producer duo Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett. It was ranked at No. 19 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 20 Best R&B Albums of 2014.” The magazine declared: “An omnivorous 19-year-old with a lusciously soulful voice, Daniel Caesar is the latest Toronto R&B sensation; and like Drake, the Weeknd and PartyNextDoor, he immerses you in an atmospheric pool of turbid emotion … [W]e're witnessing the dawn of an abiding talent.”

The next year, Caesar released another EP, Pilgrim’s Paradise (2015). It was longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize in 2016. Caesar built a steady following off of these releases and did so largely by himself. In the early years of his career, he worked without a major label or a publicist, a reflection of his father’s poor experience in the music industry.

Freudian (2017)

Daniel Caesar’s debut album, Freudian (2017), was released on Golden Child Recordings, Caesar’s own label. Caesar has said that Freudian is about the most intense relationship of his life and a reflection on his upbringing in a strict faith community.

Freudian was a considerable critical and commercial success. Caesar quickly sold out major venues in Toronto and performed on late-night shows in the US. He got a huge boost in publicity when two of his songs appeared on former US president Barack Obama’s list of his favourite songs of 2017.

Two of the album’s singles, “Get You” (featuring Kali Uchis) and “Best Part” (with H.E.R.), peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B chart and were massive international hits. “Get You” was certified platinum in Britain, 4x platinum in Canada and New Zealand and 7x platinum in the US. “Best Part” was also certified platinum in Britain and 4x platinum in Canada, as well as 5x platinum in New Zealand and 6x platinum in the US. Even the non-charting singles “We Find Love” and “Blessed” earned platinum certification in the US and internationally.

Freudian earned two Grammy nominations and won the Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. It was certified gold in Canada by 2018 and eventually went double platinum. It was also certified platinum in the US and triple platinum in New Zealand. In 2019, Caesar won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance for “Best Part.”

Case Study 01 (2019)

Daniel Caesar released his second full-length album, Case Study 01, on 28 June 2019. It features collaborations with such artists as Pharrell Williams, Brandy, John Mayer and Kardinal Offishall, among others. The single “Love Again” (with Brandy) became Caesar’s third song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Adult R&B Chart. It was certified gold in both Canada and the US.

Writing in Exclaim!, Jacob Carey noted that the album “differs from its predecessor by its experimental nature. Caesar undeniably takes more risks than before, willing to push the boundaries of his voice and production in order to diversify his sounds.” Case Study 01 was longlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize.

Caesar was also featured on Justin Bieber’s hit single “Peaches,” released on 19 March 2021. The song hit No. 1 in both Canada and the US and was nominated for four Grammy Awards. It was later certified 6x platinum in Canada and 4x platinum in the US.

Never Enough (2023)

Caesar’s third album, Never Enough, his first for Republic Records, was released in April 2023. Ben Okazawa of Exclaim! called it “a cohesive display of genre experimentation that cements Caesar's place as one of the smartest and most talented artists in today's constantly mutating R&B pantheon.” It was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize in 2023 and earned Caesar five Juno Award nominations, including for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Single of the Year (“Always”). It won the Juno for Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year.

Caesar embarked on his first world tour, the Superpowers World Tour, in 2023.

Son of Spergy (2025)

Daniel Caesar’s reconciliation with his parents was the inspiration behind his fourth album, Son of Spergy, released on 24 October 2025. Caesar’s father, whose nickname is Spergy, is featured singing on the album, which has a heavy gospel influence. The album received mixed reviews, with Irene Monokandilos of Clash calling it “diet Daniel Caesar at best.”

On 27 September 2025, Caesar gave a pop-up acoustic performance at Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park, the same park where he sometimes slept years earlier when he was homeless. Thousands of fans showed up for the concert after Caesar posted a message to his Instagram page saying, “Toronto. Trinity Bellwoods. Five o’clock.” Caesar then travelled to Montreal and gave a similar performance at Parc des Hirondelles the next day.

Son of Spergy earned Caesar four Juno Award nominations. It was also announced that he would become only the eleventh artist ever to receive the Junos’ International Achievement Award.
