Misel Joe

Saqamaw (Chief) Mise’l Joe (He/Him/Nekm) is a member of Miawpukek First Nation and has been appointed the Newfoundland District Chief for the Mi'kmaq Grand Council since 1983, appointed by the late Grand Chief Donald Marshall. He comes from a strong Mi’kmaw family, with both his grandfather and uncle having held the office of hereditary Saqamaw. Saqamaw Joe is considered the Spiritual Chief of the Mi’kmaq in Newfoundland, where he is committed to preserving the language, culture and traditions of his people. He is also a recognized author and recipient of the Order of Canada — awarded to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
