Sheila Elizabeth Whitton (Primary Source)

In 2015, The Memory Project interviewed Sheila Elizabeth Whitton (née Hiller), a veteran of the Second World War. The following recording (and transcript) is an excerpt from this interview. Born in Toronto, Ontario, on 25 October 1922, Whitton joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service in 1943 and trained as a coder. In 1944, she was sent to England in preparation for D-Day to work on coding machines instrumental to the Allies’ success. There she reunited with her long-time boyfriend, Bob Flemming, an officer of the Queen’s Own Regiment. The couple married but had little time together, as Flemming was killed in Normandy. In this testimony, Whitton describes her time as a coder and the loss of her husband. In 1950, she married John Whitton, who served in the Canadian army during the war. Sheila Whitton died on 26 November 2017 in Collingwood, Ontario. Smiley Douglas served with 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment (2 PPCLI) during the Korean War. Mr. Douglas was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for saving the lives of two of soldiers when he grabbed a smoking grenade. He lost his hand when the grenade exploded.
