    George Manuel

    George Manuel, OC, LLD, lawyer, Secwépemc leader, (born 17 or 21 February 1921 in the traditional Secwépemc territory in British Columbia; died on 15 November 1989 in Kamloops, British Columbia). George Manuel was a Secwépemc leader who led multiple Indigenous organizations on local, national and international scales (see Indigenous Peoples in Canada). He was the president of the National Indian Brotherhood of Canada (now Assembly of First Nations) from 1970 to 1976 and founded the World Council of Indigenous Peoples in 1975.

    George Martell Miller, architect (b at Port Hope, Canada W 1855; d at Toronto 17 Apr 1933). Designer of many fine neoclassical structures in Toronto, he came to the city in the early 1880s, taught at the Mechanics' Institute and began to practise architecture in 1885.

    George McLean

    George McLean, DCM, Okanagan (Interior Salish) cowboy, rancher, firefighter, soldier and war hero (born 15 April 1875 in Douglas Lake, BC; died 7 September 1934 in Merritt, BC). McLean was a veteran of both the South African War (see Canada and the South African War) and the First World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his heroic actions at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917.

    George Mercer Dawson

    George Mercer Dawson, geologist (born 1 August 1849 in Pictou, NS; died 2 March 1901 in Ottawa, ON). George Dawson was the son of Sir John William Dawson. He studied at McGill, then at the Royal School of Mines in London, UK. He later worked for the Geological Survey of Canada and mapped large swaths of Canada’s geological and mineral resources.

    George Mitchell Croil

    George Mitchell Croil, airman (b at Milwaukee, Wis 5 June 1893; d at Vancouver 8 Apr 1959). Croil flew with the Royal Flying Corps in Salonika and trained pilots in the Middle East in WWI. In 1919 he joined the Canadian Air Board and was one of 62 officers granted RCAF commissions in 1924.

    The following article is an editorial written by The Canadian Encyclopedia staff. Editorials are not usually updated. George Orton is known as Canada's first Olympic gold medal winner. On the official Olympic Games website, there are two records concerning George Orton at the 1900 Paris Olympics. The records show that he won a bronze medal in the 400 m men's hurdles and a gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase.
