George F.G. Stanley
George Francis Gillman Stanley was a Canadian historian and educator who also served as the lieutenant governor of New Brunswick from 1982 to 1987. Stanley is perhaps best known as the designer of the Canadian flag, having advocated for a design that was simple enough to be drawn by children and for which he provided a sketch that was unanimously approved. Stanley’s historical writings focused on the Canadian military and the development of the Canadian West. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976 and a Companion in 1994.
