Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), an arms-length federal granting agency that supports academic research and instruction in the social sciences and humanities. It was created in 1977 and began operations the following year, taking over programs administered by the humanities and social sciences division of the Canada Council. Its headquarters are in Ottawa. The council administers programs of fellowships for research training, grants for research, scholarly publications and exchanges, conferences, and other research-related activities.

SSHRC is the single most important financial contributor to Canadian academic research in music. Graduate, post-graduate and university-employed scholars are eligible for an array of fellowships and grants ranging from graduate fellowships, research initiative grants and Canada Research Chairs. The scope of intellectual enquiry supported by the granting agency is extremely varied and reflects the diversity of musical studies in Canada. Musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, performance, music education and music librarianship are among some of the musical disciplines eligible for SSHRC funding. Grants and fellowships are awarded through a national and independent peer-review process.
