Sidney Earle Smith, lawyer, professor, politician (b at Port Hood, NS 9 Mar 1897; d at Ottawa 17 Mar 1959). He lectured at Dalhousie and Osgoode Hall before becoming dean of the Dalhousie Law School in 1929.

Sidney Earle Smith, lawyer, professor, politician (b at Port Hood, NS 9 Mar 1897; d at Ottawa 17 Mar 1959). He lectured at Dalhousie and Osgoode Hall before becoming dean of the Dalhousie Law School in 1929. In 1934 he began a successful tenure as president of U of Man and in 1945 was appointed president of U of T, where he was a strong supporter of liberal-arts education. In Sept 1957 he was sworn in as John DIEFENBAKER's minister of external affairs. After an initial period of adjustment, Smith was gaining respect in the international community and had just hit his stride as minister when he died suddenly.
