Shandro, Alta, Unincorporated Place . Shandro is located 70 km northeast of Edmonton. It is named for Andrew Shandro (1886-1942), its first settler and, as MLA for Whitford, Alta (1913-21), the first UKRAINIAN elected to a legislature in Canada. The Historical Village and Pioneer Museum at Shandro recreates the pioneer life of early Ukrainian settlers. It contains Shandro's thatched log home, a granary, blacksmith shop, a gristmill, a replica of a Boorday, and one of the province's oldest Orthodox churches, St Mary's, completed in 1904.
