Sainte-Julie is mainly a residential city that prides itself on being "the city in the country." The city has managed to protect its natural environment by providing parks in every neighbourhood and by connecting them with 38 km of walking and cycling paths, one of which circles the foot of Mont Saint-Bruno. Only 4% of urbanized territory has been put aside for industrial use, mainly high-tech manufacturing firms working in partnership with research centres involved in aeronautics, energy, agri-food and industrial materials engineering.

Sainte-Julie is very outdoors-minded and boasts a wide range of recreational facilities including an outdoor recreation centre and one of Québec's most prestigious golf clubs, La Vallée du Richelieu.
