Music Inter Alia

Music Inter Alia. Winnipeg-based organization founded in 1976 by pianist Diana McIntosh and incorporated in 1978 to promote 20th-century music, particularly Canadian. It pursues this objective by presenting concerts, commissioning new works, and holding an annual competition for new composers in Manitoba. An annual series of three concerts in the Winnipeg Art Gallery was increased to four in the 1986-7 season. In the spirit of its name, translated as 'Music Amongst Other Things,' the organization's programs often feature multimedia performances with a wide and colourful variety of acoustic and electronic instruments, interacting with slide projections, lighting, dance, drama, and narration. Its annual new composers competition was begun in the 1981-2 season and offers a $500 prize and a performance of the winning work, which has frequently also been broadcast on the CBC radio program 'Two New Hours'.
