    John Graves Simcoe, army officer, lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada (born 25 February 1752 in Cotterstock, Britain; died 26 October 1806 in Exeter, Britain). Simcoe served as an officer with the British army in the American Revolutionary War, but is best known to Canadians as the first lieutenant-governor of the new British colony of Upper Canada, which later became Ontario.

    John Henry Yahba

    John Henry Yahba, Ojibwe farmer, soldier, war hero, labourer (born 1 October 1880 at Saugeen First Nation, ON; died 29 November 1953 in Chippewa Hill, ON). Yahba served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. In the closing month of that war, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his heroism in battle on the Western Front. (See also  Indigenous Peoples and the World Wars.)

    John MacGregor

    John (Jock) MacGregor, VC, MC & Bar, DCM, carpenter, soldier and businessman (born 11 February 1888 in Cawdor, Nairnshire, Scotland; died 9 June 1952 in Powell River, British Columbia). MacGregor was one of Canada’s most decorated servicemen. He joined the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles during the First World War and rejoined the army again for the Second World War. For his heroic actions in the First World War, MacGregor received the Victoria Cross (VC), two Military Crosses (MC) and the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).
