Mount Edith Cavell, elevation 3368 m, the highest mountain in the environs of Jasper, Alberta, is situated west of the Athabasca River, 24 km south of Jasper. A prominent landmark, it was called "La Montagne de la Grande Traverse" by voyageurs during the days when Athabasca Pass was used as a fur-trade route across the Rockies. It was named in 1916 after the English matron of the Red Cross Hospital in Brussels. Its first ascent was made in 1915. Mountaineers consider the north face to be one of the great climbs in North America.
