John Richard Reppen, "Jack," artist, painter (b at Toronto 17 July 1933; d there 2 June 1964). Studying design at the Ontario Coll of Art in the evening, he was a free-lance cartoonist for the Toronto Star 1952-64 and art director for the Prudential Insurance Co, Toronto, 1952-62. From 1959 he devoted himself to his painting, exhibiting regularly in solo and group shows, and created several murals on commission. Travel - to Mexico (1961, 1963) and northern France (1962) - was an important source of Reppen's imagery. His best works have a strong feeling for surface and texture, with an almost relief quality, being often built on a matrix of gesso, with collage elements and incised surfaces.
