Jean C. Monty, business executive (born June 1943 in Montréal, Québec). Having earned a bachelor of arts degree, a master’s degree in economics from the University of Western Ontario, and a master’s of business administration from the University of Chicago, Jean C. Monty began his career at Bell Canada in 1974. He was Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Nortel Networks Corporation, the company that he had joined in October 1992 as President and Chief Operating Officer to eventually become the President and CEO in March 1993.
Monty was appointed Chairman of the Board and CEO of BCE Inc. on 26 April 2000. He had joined the firm on 1 October 1997 as President and Chief Operating Officer and member of its Board of Directors. He was named its President and CEO on 6 May 1998. He was also Chairman of the Board and CEO of Bell Canada and Chairman of the Board of Bell Mobility Inc. and Teleglobe Inc. Monty is also a member of the Board of Directors of Bombardier Inc. and sits on the boards of several companies in the BCE group.
Monty is a Member of the Order of Canada. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Mayor of Shanghai’s International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council, as well as President of the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. He was named Canada’s CEO of the Year for 1997 and has been inducted into the Academy of Great Montrealers.
