Canada Council Medal

The Canada Council Medal. Annual award established in 1961 by the Canada Council 'for outstanding achievement in the arts, humanities or social sciences'. The first medals were awarded 19 Feb 1962 to Marius Barbeau, Wilfrid Pelletier, and Healey Willan and to seven persons in other flelds.

The Canada Council Medal. Annual award established in 1961 by the Canada Council 'for outstanding achievement in the arts, humanities or social sciences'. The first medals were awarded 19 Feb 1962 to Marius Barbeau, Wilfrid Pelletier, and Healey Willan and to seven persons in other flelds. Among the 24 later recipients were Claude Champagne in 1963, Sir Ernest MacMillan in 1964, Norman McLaren in 1966, and in 1967 the first foreigner, Igor Stravinsky. The award was combined in 1968 with the Molson Prizes, continuing under the latter name. The medal, cast in bronze, was designed by Dora de Pedery Hunt.
