John Stuart Foster, physicist (b at Clarence, NS 30 May 1890; d at Berkeley, Calif 9 Sept 1964). After receiving a doctorate from Yale, he was appointed assistant professor of physics at McGill in 1924 and did postdoctoral work with Niels Bohr in 1926.

Alexander Edgar Douglas, physicist (b at Melfort, Sask 12 Apr 1916; d at Ottawa 26 July 1981). Educated at the University of Saskatchewan and Pennsylvania State University, he joined the National Research Council's physics division in 1941.

Alice Vibert Douglas, astronomer (b at Montréal 1894; d at Kingston Ont 2 July 1988). Douglas received her doctorate from McGill in 1926. During WWI she was engaged in war work in England and then studied at the Cambridge Observatory and the Cavendish Laboratory 1921-23.

John Convey, metallurgist (b at Craghead, Eng 29 Mar 1910; d at Toronto 14 Jan 2006). Having immigrated to Alberta in 1929, he later moved to Ontario, where he earned a PhD in atomic physics at the University of Toronto in 1940.

Hugh Le Caine, physicist, designer of electronic-music instruments, composer (b at Port Arthur [Thunder Bay], Ont 27 May 1914; d at Ottawa 3 July 1977). He was trained as a physicist at Queen's and later at Birmingham University (Eng).

From 1958-71 Chapman played a key role in initiating and directing the spectacularly successful Alouette/ISIS scientific Earth Satellite program. With the launch of Alouette 1 in September 1962 Canada became the third country to design and build an Earth satellite.

John Lambourne Locke, CM, FRSC, astronomer (born 1 May 1921 in Brantford, ON; died 29 April 2010 in New Westminster, BC).

Albert Edward Litherland, "Ted," nuclear physicist (b at Wallasey, Eng 12 Mar 1928). Ted Litherland received a BSc in 1949 and a PhD in 1955 from the U of Liverpool. He was a National Research Council Fellow (1953-55) and a career scientist (1955-66) with Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.

Frank Scott Hogg, astrophysicist (b at Preston, Ont 26 July 1904; d at Richmond Hill, Ont 1 Jan 1951). In 1929 Hogg received the first doctorate in ASTRONOMY awarded by Harvard, where he pioneered in the spectrophotometry of stars and in the study of the spectra of comets.

Eli Franklin Burton, physicist (b at Green R, Ont 14 Feb 1879; d at Toronto 6 July 1948). Educated at U of T and Cambridge, Burton spent his whole career at U of T, succeeding J.C. McLennan as head of the physics department in

Bertram Neville Brockhouse, physicist (born 15 July 1918 in Lethbridge, AB; died 13 October 2003 in Hamilton, ON). Brockhouse pioneered the use of thermal neutrons to study structural, dynamical and magnetic aspects of the behaviour of condensed matter systems at an atomic level.

Harry Lambert Welsh, physicist, educator (b at Aurora, Ont 23 Mar 1910; d at Toronto 23 July 1984). He was educated and spent his career at U of T, except for 1931-33 in Göttingen and 1943-45 in Ottawa as lieutenant-commander of naval operational research.

James Loudon, educator, physicist (b at Toronto 24 May 1841; d there 29 Dec 1916). President of the University of Toronto from 1892 to 1906, Loudon devoted his life to the university.

David Arnold Keys, physicist (b at Toronto 4 Nov 1890; d at Ottawa 28 Oct 1977). He was a much-loved professor at McGill 1922-47 and thereafter the "mayor of Chalk River" - administrative manager of the Canadian atomic project. After research on antisubmarine warfare with J.C.

John Larkin Kerwin, physicist, research director (born 22 June 1924 in Québec City, Québec; died 1 May 2004 in Québec City). Kerwin joined Laval's physics department in 1946 after study at St Francis Xavier, U of T and Massachusetts Inst of Technology and, after earning his DSc at Laval, rose to become its rector in 1972.

George Craig Laurence, nuclear physicist (b at Charlottetown 21 Jan 1905; d at Deep River, Ont 6 Nov 1987). Educated at Dalhousie and Cambridge (under Ernest RUTHERFORD), Laurence became the NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL's radium and X-ray physicist in 1930, when J.A.

Andrew McKellar, astrophysicist, molecular spectroscopist (b at Vancouver 2 Feb 1910; d at Victoria 6 May 1960). McKellar received the MBE in 1947 for his work in WWII as a research officer in the Royal Canadian Navy.

James Gordon MacGregor, physicist (b at Halifax 31 Mar 1852; d at Edinburgh, Scot 21 May 1913). Educated at Dalhousie University, MacGregor was awarded a Gilchrist scholarship in 1871 and studied under Peter Guthrie Tait at Edinburgh and Gustav Wiedeman at Leipzig.
