Nathaniel Hew Grace, chemist (b at Allahabad, India 10 Nov 1902; d at Rochester, Alta 13 Nov 1961). The son of a missionary, Grace attended schools in California and Saskatchewan. He graduated from U of Sask (1925) and completed his PhD in physical chemistry at McGill (1931).

Andrew Robertson Gordon, physical chemist, educator (b at Toronto June 26 1896; d there 29 July 1967). He was an officer in the Canadian Field Artillery in WWI and was appointed to the department of chemistry of the University of Toronto in 1925.

Henry Holmes Croft, educator, scientist (b at London, Eng 6 Mar 1820; d near San Diego, Tex 1 Mar 1883). For 37 years Croft was professor of chemistry (the first) at the University of Toronto and its antecedent, King's College.

 Abraham Gesner, geologist, author, chemist, inventor (b near Cornwallis, NS 2 May 1797; d at Halifax, NS 29 Apr 1864). Gesner invented kerosene oil and, because of his patents for distilling bituminous material, was a founder of the modern Petroleum Industry.

Brian Evans Conway, chemistry professor (b at Farnborough, Eng 26 Jan 1927). After obtaining his doctorate from the University of London in 1949, Conway worked as a research associate at the Chester Beatty Cancer Research Institute in London.

Alan Newton Campbell, professor of chemistry (b at Halifax, Eng 29 Oct 1899; d at Winnipeg 10 Nov 1987). After receiving a doctorate from King's College, London, Campbell became assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Manitoba in 1930.

John Bright Ferguson, "Fergie," chemist, professor (b at Londesborough, Ont 2 Nov 1889; d at Toronto 7 Jan 1963).

Michael Smith, biochemist, professor (b at Blackpool, Eng 26 April 1932; died 4 October 2000, Vancouver). After obtaining a PhD from U of Manchester, Smith came to Canada in 1956.

Charles Alexander McDowell, physical chemist (born 29 August 1918 in Belfast, Ireland; died 18 September 2001). McDowell came to Canada in 1955 as head of the chemistry department of the University of British Columbia.

Donald James Le Roy, physical chemist, science adviser (b at Detroit, Mich 5 Mar 1913; d at Ottawa 1 Nov 1985). After gaining his PhD at the University of Toronto (1939), he joined E.W.R.

Keith James Laidler, chemist, professor (b at Liverpool, Eng 3 Jan 1916). After studying at Oxford and Princeton and holding appointments at the National Research Council and Catholic U, Washington, DC, he joined U of Ottawa in 1955.

Jeanne Fisher Manery, biochemist (b at Chesley, Ont 6 July 1908; d at Toronto 9 Sept 1986).

Erich Baer, chemist, educator (b at Berlin, Ger 8 Mar 1901; d at Toronto 23 Sept 1975). He studied at University of Berlin under Hermann O.L. Fischer, with whom he worked until 1948 (from 1937 at University of Toronto). Baer became a professor in 1951 and professor emeritus in 1969.

John Seaman Bates, chemist, environmentalist (b at Woodstock, Ont 9 June 1888; d at Sackville, NB 26 Nov 1991). A graduate of Acadia U, in 1914 Bates obtained the first PhD in chemical engineering granted by Columbia U.

Arthur Newcombe Bourns, OC, FRSC, professor of chemistry, university administrator (born 8 December 1919 in Petitcodiac, NB; died 29 May 2015 in Burlington, ON).

Harry Emmet Gunning, OC, scientist, administrator (born 16 December 1916 in Toronto, ON; died 24 November 2002 in Edmonton, AB).

During WWII John was sent to safety in Toronto. He entered Manchester University in 1946 and received his PhD in chemistry in 1952 on the basis of his work measuring the strengths of chemical bonds in compounds that have been subjected to very high temperatures.

Fernand Seguin, biochemist and scientific popularizer (b at Montréal, Qué 9 June 1922; d there 19 June 1988). His MA thesis, concerning a method to determine the aminopyrine in the blood, won him the Prix Casgrain-Charbonneau.

Philip Siu Lun Lee, CM, OM, 24th lieutenant-governor of Manitoba 2009–15, research chemist (born 5 May 1944 in Hong Kong). Lee was installed as 24th lieutenant-governor of Manitoba following 38 years in municipal civil service. Lee was the first person of Asian heritage to be appointed to the vice-regal position in Manitoba and the third Chinese Canadian appointed lieutenant-governor in Canada.
