Morten Parker, director, writer, producer, educator (b at Winnipeg 28 July 1919). Morten Parker began his career as a journalist and joined the NATIONAL FILM BOARD (NFB) in 1943 to work on numerous documentaries as a writer and director. Eventually he was made responsible for the NFB's labour films.

Bress, Hyman. Violinist, b Cape Town, South Africa, 30 Jun 1931, naturalized Canadian 1952, d Montreal 30 Oct 1995. He took his first lessons with his father, making his debut with the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra at nine and performing extensively in South Africa afterwards.

Noël (Armand) Brunet. Violinist, teacher, b Montreal 25 Dec 1916, d Chicoutimi, Que, 11 Aug 1973; premier prix (Royal Cons of Brussels) 1939. After violin study with his brother Henri he trained with Alfred De Sève.

Alcibiade Béique. Organist, teacher, b St-Jean-Baptiste-de-Rouville, near Montreal, 20 Oct 1856, d Montreal 20 Jun 1896. After organ lessons with Romain-Octave Pelletier, he studied 1877-8 at the Liège Cons and travelled in Italy, France, and England.

Frederick H. (Harold) Blair. Organist-choirmaster, pianist, teacher, b Chatham, NB, 10 Jan 1874, d at sea, near the Hebrides, 3 Sep 1939. As a youth he held church organ positions while studying piano and organ with A.W.S. Smythe in Chatham and Thomas Morley in Saint John, NB.

Cédia Brault. Mezzo-soprano, b Ste-Martine, near Montreal, 4 Jan 1894, d Montreal 27 Jun 1972. The sister of Victor Brault, she studied voice 1911-18 with Céline Marier and 1918-19 with Salvator Issaurel and harmony 1918-20 with Rodolphe Mathieu.

In 1933 Mary Percy Jackson published her letters to England, 1929-31, in a book entitled On the Last Frontier: Pioneering in the Peace River Block.

Anne Adamson Campbell. Choir conductor, born Sutherland, near Saskatoon, 16 Jun 1912, died Cochrane, Alta 13 Apr 2011; ATCM piano 1930, L MUS (Saskatchewan) 1932, ATCM voice 1934, honorary LLD (Lethbridge) 1983.

Arthur Thomas Bushby. Amateur musician, civil servant, b London 2 Mar 1835, d New Westminster, BC, 18 May 1875. Bushby's 1856 diary shows that he played violin and sang in musical societies in London. He spent the summer of 1856 in Italy, studying voice, piano, and Italian.

Hatzis began doctoral studies in composition at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1977. Lejaren Hiller was his supervisor; he also studied with Morton Feldman and Wlodimierz Kotonski. The Law of One was his doctoral thesis composition.

Jamelie Hassan, artist (b at London, Ont 1 Sept 1948) studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome, in 1967, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Beyrouth, Lebanon, in 1968, at the UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR in 1969 and the University of Mustansyria, Baghdad, Iraq, from 1978 to 1979.

(E.) Jules Brazil. Songwriter, arranger, entertainer, fl Toronto 1910-25. Known to have been a music teacher 1910-25 in Toronto, Brazil also was the composer or arranger (rarely the lyricist) of many songs published 1915-21 by Whaley Royce, Gordon V.

Howard (Fuller) Brown. Pianist, teacher, b Arkona, near London, Ont, 24 Jul 1920; ATCM 1939, BA (Toronto) 1943, B MUS (Toronto) 1946, Artist Diploma (RCMT) 1949, MA music literature (Michigan) 1954.

Charles-Onésime Lamontagne. Baritone, impresario, administrator, critic, b Montreal 21 Jan 1865, d there 21 Jan 1957. He was a member of the Montreal Philharmonic Society for about 15 years and belonged 1890-1912 to the choirs of the Gesù Church, St James Cathedral, and Notre-Dame Church.

(Harold) Barrie Cabena. Organist, composer, b Melbourne, Australia, 12 Aug 1933, naturalized Canadian 1966; ARCM organ 1955, ARCM teacher's 1956, FRCO 1956, FTCL 1959, honorary FRCCO 1973. He studied 1954-7 at the RCM with Sir John Dykes Bower (organ), W.S.

Steve (Steven Scott) Wallace. Bassist, b Toronto 16 Aug 1956. He studied guitar privately with Gary Benson and double bass 1975-6 at Humber College with Lenny Boyd. In 1979 he began working in Toronto jazz clubs - eg, Bourbon Street until 1984, George's Spaghetti House and, 1982-3, Lytes.

Frank (Edward) Blachford. Violinist, teacher, conductor, composer, b Toronto 28 Dec 1879, d Calgary 24 Jun 1957; ATCM 1897. He studied at the TCM with Bertha Drechsler Adamson, graduating in 1897, and continued at the Leipzig Cons with Hans Sitt and Carl Reinecke.

Jack (b John) Kane. Arranger, conductor, clarinetist, composer, b London, England, 29 Nov 1924, d Toronto 27 Mar 1961; B MUS (Toronto) 1950. Jack Kane's father was the British music-hall entertainer Barry Kane.

Joseph Gaétan Robert Gérald Boulet, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (born 1 March 1946 in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC; died 18 July 1990 in Longueuil, QC).

Bouliane has received numerous awards, including the PRO Canada prize for Climats (1980). He was the recipient of the 1980 Robert Fleming Award, and in 1982 his work Jeux de Société won the CBC National Radio Competition for Young Composers and the Gaudeamus Foundation Competition in Holland.
