Peter John Vickers Worthington, soldier, journalist, publisher, author (born 16 February 1927 in Fort Osborne Barracks, Winnipeg; died 12 May 2013 in Toronto, ON). Co-founder and outspoken editor in chief of the Toronto Sun from 1971 to 1982.

  John Hamilton Gordon Russell, architect (b at Toronto 5 Nov 1862; d at Winnipeg 7 Feb 1946), a prominent member of the profession in Manitoba from 1894 until WWI. Apprenticed to H.B. Gordon and Helliwell at age 16, from 1886 Russell worked for offices in several western US cities.

Joanne Tod, painter (b at Montréal 12 Feb 1953). Educated in the mid-1970s at Toronto's ONTARIO COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN where she studied painting, Joanne Tod first gained critical attention in 1982 with her participation in the artist-organized Toronto exhibition Monumenta.

Alexander Whyte Wright, journalist, labour leader, politician (b at Elmira, Ont 17 Dec 1845; d c 1919). After some business attempts in southwestern Ontario, he became a journalist and newspaper editor in the 1870s.

Rawi Hage, novelist, photographer (b Beirut, Lebanon 1964). As a young man growing up in Beirut and Cyprus during the years of the Lebanese civil war, Rawi Hage experienced life in a war zone directly.

Anderson studied ballet as a child and in 1973 became one of the first wave of graduates of the dance program at York University in Toronto. She also studied at the London Contemporary Dance Theatre and in New York.

Alfred Wicks, "Ben," cartoonist (b at London, Eng 1 Oct 1926; d at Toronto 10 Sept 2000). His caricatures weren't sophisticated, but his satire was trenchant. "Actually I am rotten at drawing," he cheerfully admitted.

Raffi Cavoukian, children's singer (b at Cairo, Egypt 8 July 1948). Raffi's Armenian family came to Canada in 1958 and settled in Toronto. He began his career as a folksinger in coffee houses in 1970, but found his niche playing for young children four years later.

Joseph Gagnier. Clarinetist, b Ancienne-Lorette, near Quebec City, 5 Apr 1854, d Montreal 19 Apr 1919. Having decided to make a career in music, he moved in 1874 to Montreal, where he studied theory with Ernest Lavigne and Joseph Geai and clarinet with Oscar Arnold and Jacques Vanpoucke.

In 1924 they took the name Royal Canadians. Their New Year's Eve broadcasts from New York's Roosevelt Grill (1929-62), and later the Waldorf Astoria, were a traditional part of North American celebrations, known especially for their theme "Auld Lang Syne.

Adele Wiseman, novelist (b at Winnipeg, Man 21 May 1928; d at Toronto, Ont 1 June 1992). Wiseman's Russian-Jewish parents emigrated in the early 1920s from the Ukraine to Winnipeg.

Amanda Meta Marshall, singer, songwriter (b at Toronto, 29 Aug 1972). Marshall began performing at age 16 and was discovered 2 years later by Toronto guitarist Jeff Healey, whose drummer, Tom Stephen, eventually became her manager.

Achille Fortier. Composer, teacher, b St-Clet, near Montreal, 23 Oct 1864, d Viauville, Montreal, 19 Aug 1939; honorary D MUS (Montreal) 1926.

(Lauréat) Vincent Dionne. Percussionist, composer, b Chicoutimi, Que, 15 Jan 1942; premier prix percussion (CMM) 1968. He studied 1962-6 at the CMQ with Roger Juneau and Louis Charbonneau and 1966-8 with the latter at the CMM.

Herman Arthur Voaden, playwright, director, educator, editor (b at London, Ont 19 Jan 1903; d in Toronto 27 June 1991).
