Beverley Simons, née Rosen, playwright (b at Flin Flon, Man 31 Mar 1938). Simons grew up in Edmonton and was educated at the Banff School of Fine Arts, McGill University and the University of British Columbia, where she completed a BA in English and Theatre in 1959.

Maureen Jennings, writer (born 23 April 1939 in Birmingham, UK). A talented writer with a keen eye for setting, character and dialogue, Maureen Jennings has helped put historical crime fiction on the Canadian literary map. She has published three series of novels as well as nonfiction, short stories and stage plays, and is best known for her Detective Murdoch series of historical crime novels. Inspired by the career of Ontario detective John Wilson Murray, the Murdoch books have been adapted into the popular, long-running television series Murdoch Mysteries (2008–).

Dorothy Stevens, portrait and figure painter (b at Toronto 2 Sept 1888; d there 5 June 1966). Entering the Slade School of Art, London, at age 15, she studied under Wilson Steer and Henry Tonks. She subsequently studied in Paris and travelled on the continent before returning to Canada.

Grant Strate, OC, dancer, choreographer, educator (born 7 December 1927 in Cardston, AB; died 9 February 2015 in Vancouver, BC ).

James Simpson, printer, journalist, trade unionist (b at Lindal-in-Furness, Eng 14 Dec 1873; d at Toronto 24 Sept 1938). In the 1890s Simpson rose quickly from printer's "devil" to a career as a journalist for the Toronto Star.

Chris Austin Hadfield, OC, OOnt, astronaut, military test pilot (born 29 August 1959 in Sarnia, ON). After a distinguished career as a test pilot, Hadfield became an astronaut in 1992. Over the course of his career, he achieved a series of Canadian firsts: he was the first Canadian to be a space mission specialist, to operate the Canadarm in orbit, to do a spacewalk and to command the International Space Station. He was also the first to record a music video in space — a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” — adding to his celebrity status. Hadfield retired from the Canadian Astronaut Corps in July 2013. In 2014, he began teaching in the University of Waterloo’s aviation program.

Omond McKillop Solandt, research director (b at Winnipeg, Man 2 Sept 1909; d at Alliston, Ont 12 May 1993). He studied at Toronto and began a research career in physiology under C.H. BEST before winning a scholarship to England for advanced training in 1939.

John Sutherland, writer, editor (b at Liverpool, NS 21 Feb 1919; d at Toronto 1 Sept 1956). Sutherland's formal studies (Queen's 1936-37 and McGill 1941-42) were interrupted by ill health which dogged him all his life.
