He grew up doing both long and short track, practising his short-track skills in the fall and spring on indoor rinks while waiting for the long-track rink outdoors to freeze.

Kyle Shewfelt, gymnast (b at Calgary, Alta, 6 May 1982). Kyle Shewfelt holds a unique spot in Canadian gymnastic history as the first Olympic gold medal winner in Artistic Gymnastics and, along with Lori FUNG, the second Canadian to win a gold medal in the sport altogether.

Ernie Richardson, curler (born at Stoughton, Sask 1931). He gained world acclaim as skip of the famous Richardson Rink, probably the best known in Canadian curling history.
Todd Brooker, alpine skier (b at Paris, Ont 24 Nov 1959). Todd Brooker began skiing at 4 and by 12 was racing throughout Ontario and Québec. An extremely aggressive skier, he has experienced both spectacular wins and devastating injuries.
Maëlle Ricker, snowboarder (b at North Vancouver, BC, 2 Dec 1978). Maëlle Ricker is the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in SNOWBOARDING and the first Canadian woman to win Olympic gold on Canadian soil.
Terrence Gordon Sawchuk, hockey goalkeeper (b at Winnipeg 28 Dec 1929; d at New York 31 May 1970). He played junior hockey in Winnipeg and Galt, Ont, turning professional at age 17 with Omaha.
Russell Maurice Saunders, stuntman, acrobat (born at Winnipeg 21 May 1919; died at Los Angeles 29 May 2001). Russell Saunders was known as the king of Hollywood stuntmen.
Liisa Savijarvi, alpine skier (b at Bracebridge, Ont 29 Dec 1963). Off to an early start at age 14 months, she began racing at 8 and was competing nationally by 14.
Louis Rubenstein, figure skater (b at Montréal 23 Sept 1861; d there 3 Jan 1931). One of Canada's finest all-round athletes, Rubenstein was Canadian figure-skating champion 1883-89.
Alexis Le Trotteur, né Lapointe (b at La Malbaie, Qué 4 June 1860; d at Alma, Qué 12 Jan 1924). Le Trotteur is the French Canadian designation of Alexis Lapointe, called so because of his fantastic running ability.
Laurie Grant Skreslet, mountaineer and guide, outdoor equipment designer (b at Calgary 25 Oct 1949). Skreslet's affinity for international MOUNTAINEERING can be traced to early hiking and camping trips in the Rockies and a
Ron Turcotte, jockey (b at Drummond, NB 22 July 1941). One of 11 children, Turcotte was always a strong jockey because of his early years as a lumberjack in New Brunswick. Unemployment in 1959 sent him to Toronto where he obtained a job as a hot-walker at E.P. TAYLOR's Windfields Farms.
Edward William Shore, hockey player (b at Ft Qu'Appelle, Sask 25 Nov 1902; d at Springfield, Mass 16 Mar 1985). He attended the Manitoba Agricultural Coll, played senior hockey in Melville and turned professional with Regina Caps and Edmonton Eskimos of the Western Hockey League.
