André Turp. Tenor, b Montreal 21 Dec 1925, d there 25 Feb 1991. He took voice lessons from Édouard Woolley and Frank H. Rowe and then worked at the CMM with Ruzena Herlinger. He was awarded a Quebec government grant in 1949 and went to Italy to study with Hélène Vita.

Charles (Émile Jean Julien) Goulet. Baritone, choir conductor, teacher, impresario, administrator, b Liège 4 Apr 1902, naturalized Canadian 1921, d Montreal 12 Mar 1976; D MUS (Montreal) 1937. He arrived in Montreal with his parents in 1906 and at six began studying the violin with his uncle, J.-J.

Nathalie Simard. Singer, b Île d'Orléans, near Quebec City, 7 Jul 1969. Sister of René Simard, Nathalie Simard was initially associated with the latter's career, and was noticed by the same producer, Guy Cloutier.

René Simard. Singer, TV show host, b Chicoutimi, Que, 28 Feb 1961. René Simard's father was a choirmaster on Île d'Orléans, where he spent his childhood. At nine René was the prize winner on the program 'Les Découvertes de Jen Roger' (CFTM-TV, Montreal).

Adrienne ('Yohadio') Roy-Vilandré (b Roy, m Vilandré). Soprano, folklorist, b Lévis, near Quebec City, Que, 13 Feb 1893, d Montreal 23 Oct 1978. After taking voice lessons in Quebec City with Isa Jeynevald-Mercier, Victor Occelier, and Berthe Roy she made her debut at the Club musical de Québec.

Kevin Parent, singer, songwriter (b at Nouvelle, Qué, 12 Dec 1972). Hailing from the Gaspé region, Parent is a raspy-voiced singer-songwriter whose rootsy, folk-based songs possess a down-home edge - thanks to his twangy "gaspésien" accent.

Diana (Jean) Krall. Jazz singer, pianist, songwriter, b Nanaimo, BC, 16 Nov 1964. Originally a pianist who sang only occasionally, Diana Krall's sultry delivery of classic love songs from the American songbook helped revitalize the role of the female singer in jazz and spurred record companies to sign other singers who might be able to emulate Krall's worldwide popularity.

Barney Bentall, singer, songwriter (b at Toronto Mar 1956). The youngest of 4 children, he was raised in Calgary by father Howard, senior minister at the city's First Baptist Church, and mother Shirley, first woman president of the Baptist Federation of Canada.

Joni (Roberta Joan) Mitchell (b Anderson). Singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist, poet, painter, b Fort Macleod, near Lethbridge, Alta, 7 Nov 1943. She was raised in Saskatoon and developed childhood interests in painting, poetry, and music, all of which found expression in her later career.

Bryan Adams' first single, "Let Me Take You Dancing," was a disco hit in 1979, and was followed by the albums (for A & M) Bryan Adams (SP-4800) in 1980 and You Want It - You Got It (SP-4864) in 1981. Of his other early singles, "Fits Ya Good" was popular in 1982.

Augusta (Louise) Beverley Robinson. Mezzo-soprano, b Toronto 12 Feb 1859, d there 9 Sep 1935. Her grandfather, Sir John Beverley Robinson, was chief justice of Upper Canada.

Paul Piché. Singer, songwriter, b Montreal 15 Sep 1953. He studied archeology at the University of Montreal, and in the early 1970s sang in Quebec colleges.

Judi Richards. Pop singer, b Toronto 12 Aug 1949, by Bill Richards' first wife, the actress Billy Mae Dinsmore. She has done lead and choral work in Montreal for jingles and has sung backup in concert and/or on record for Quebec pop artists.

April (Dawn) Verch. Fiddler, composer, b Pembroke, Ont, 7 Apr 1978. Growing up in the Ottawa Valley, where there is a strong tradition of fiddle playing, Verch studied step-dancing at age three, and fiddle (with Rob Dagenais) from age six. Her family were amateur musicians.

Jean-Pierre Ferland. Singer, songwriter, b Montreal 24 Jun 1934. Jean-Pierre Ferland began his music career as a clerk for CBC Montreal during the years 1954-8, where his colleagues encouraged him to develop his singing talent.

Avis (Ruth) Phillips. Soprano, teacher, b Winnipeg 16 Nov 1900, d Vancouver 7 Mar 1986; ATCM 1918, ARCM voice 1925, ARCM piano 1925. After piano studies in Mount Forest, Ont, with Alice Roger Collins, she attended the RCM 1921-5 under Aubyn Raymar (piano) and Edith Grepe (voice).

Barbara Hannigan, CM, soprano, conductor (born 1971 in Waverley, NS). Operatic soprano and orchestra conductor Barbara Hannigan is known across Europe and North America for her innovative performances in the operatic canon and modern operas, and for being one of the few women orchestra conductors. She is perhaps best known for singing in concerts that she conducts, and for concerts that verge on performance art. A Member of the Order of Canada, her recordings have won Gramophone Awards, a Juno Award, a Grammy Award and other prestigious honours. She was named France’s Musical Personality of the Year in 2013.
