J.D. Chapman

John Doneric Chapman was born in Poole, England. He earned an MA in geography at Oxford and completed a PhD at the University of Washington. In 1947 he became a junior instructor in climatology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He remained at UBC until 1988, serving as professor, lecturer, academic planner and Head of the Department of Geography. He was chairman of the founding board of the Pacific Marine Institute, president of the Canadian Association of Geographers, chair of the Pacific Science Congress, Canadian delegate to the Geographic Union Congress in Moscow, and board member with Vancouver Community College.
