Première Nation des Pekuakamiulnuatsh is located in Quebec about 6 km north of Roberval on the western shore of Lac Saint-Jean. Prior to being declared a reserve as part of the Indian Act, the First Nation called their land Mashteuiatsh, which means “where there is a point.” Mashteuiatsh was a common meeting place due to its location along the banks of the Pekuakami. The primary languages of the First Nation are Nehlueun and French. Première Nation des Pekuakamiulnuatsh is part of the Innu (Montagnais-Naskapi) nation.
As of February 2026, the registered population was 12,502, with 2,101 members living on Première Nation des Pekuakamiulnuatsh’s reserve and 10,382 members living off-reserve. The Pekuakamiulnuatsh First Nation members live mostly in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, in the community of Mashteuiatsh.
