(ibid.) 1971, Ph.D. (Université de Washington) 1979. Berg étudie le piano avec G. Edward Lincoln à Winnipeg et, plus tard, dirige le German Male Choir Liederkranz d'Edmonton (1969-1977). Il est bénévole en Guyana avec le Service universitaire canadien outre-mer (1967-1968), devient professeur à l'Université de l'Alberta en 1974 et est directeur de la faculté de musique de 1989 à 1995. En 1990, on lui confie la présidence du Western Board of Music (auj. Conservatory Canada)

Sa thèse de doctorat porte le titre « Choral festivals and choral workshops among the Mennonites of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, 1900-1960, with an account of early developments in Russia » et ses travaux continuent par la suite de porter sur l'hymnodie, les institutions musicales et le chant choral mennonites, ainsi que, d'une manière générale, sur l'histoire de la musique dans la région d'Edmonton. Dans les années 1990, Berg étudie les airs d'hymnes obtenus des mennonites de La Crête (Alb). Il est l'auteur de nombreux articles et présente des communications devant plusieurs organismes, dont l'Institute for Anabaptist Mennonite Studies (1988), la Société de musique des universités canadiennes (1986), la Sonneck Society (1990) et la Mennonite Historical Society of Alberta (2000), parmi d'autres. Berg fait partie du comité des hymnes mennonites et participe à l'EMC et à New Grove.
