Andrew Smith, veterinarian, educator (b at Dalrymple, Scot 12 July 1834; d at 15 Aug Toronto 1910). A graduate of Edinburgh Veterinary Coll in 1881, he came to Canada that year. In 1862 he started lectures on veterinary science leading to the founding of the Upper Canada Veterinary School (later Ontario Veterinary Coll), the oldest such college in N America. He graduated over 3000 veterinarians during his 40-year tenure as principal. A pioneer of veterinary medicine and education in N America, Smith was a great promoter of his profession. He was first president of the Ontario Veterinary Assn and a prime mover for its organization (1874) and incorporation (1879). He was a founder of what is now the Canadian National Exhibition.
