Canadian Institute for Economic Policy

Canadian Institute for Economic Policy, privately funded, independent institute, established in 1979 with a 5-year mandate to study Canadian fiscal, industrial and other public-policy issues. Its 30 monographs included studies critical of the BANK OF CANADA's monetarism and of the extent of FOREIGN INVESTMENT in Canadian industry; its studies of CANADIAN-AMERICAN RELATIONS and the failure of Canada to develop an industrial policy received wide attention. Former Liberal finance minister, Walter L. GORDON, was chair and chief benefactor of the institute. It closed in 1984.
