    Ten Black Canadians in the Armed Forces

    Black Canadians have a proud tradition of military service dating to the American Revolution. Many volunteered for service during the 19th and 20th centuries, despite opposition from both civilian and military authorities. Until the Second World War, most Black Canadians served in segregated units like the Coloured Corps in the War of 1812 and No. 2 Construction Battalion in the First World War. Since then, Black soldiers, sailors and airmen and women have served in the regular and reserve forces at home and overseas. Here are some of their stories.

    Ten Female Trailblazers of Western Canada

    As prospectors, mountaineers, farmers and homesteaders, women played an important role in the development of Western Canada. This list of ten female trailblazers includes Black American settlers and prospectors; a Tagish prospector whose discovery helped spark the Klondike Gold Rush; a glacier specialist and founding member of the Alpine Club of Canada; and one of the first women hired by the North-West Mounted Police. Some travelled from overseas or the United States, others from Central or Atlantic Canada — all were lured to the Canadian west by the prospect of land, freedom and opportunity.

    Terence Dickinson

    Terence (Terry) Dickinson, CM, astronomer, writer, editor (born 10 November 1943 in Toronto, ON; died 1 February 2023 in Napanee, ON). Dickinson was recognized as one of the leading astronomy writers in North America. He was the editor, and later co-owner, of SkyNews and the author of several books of astronomy, including the commercially successful publication NightWatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe (1983). Dickinson also regularly appeared and shared information about astronomy on CBC Radio’s Quirks & Quarks and the Canadian Discovery Channel.
