    Jacques Cartier

    Jacques Cartier, navigator (born between 7 June and 23 December 1491 in Saint-Malo, France; died 1 September 1557 in Saint-Malo, France). From 1534 to 1542, Cartier led three maritime expeditions to the interior of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River. During these expeditions, he explored, but more importantly accurately mapped for the first time the interior of the river, from the Gulf to Montreal (see also History of Cartography in Canada). For this navigational prowess, Cartier is still considered by many as the founder of “Canada.” At the time, however, this term described only the region immediately surrounding Quebec. Cartier’s upstream navigation of the St. Lawrence River in the 16th century ultimately led to France occupying this part of North America.

    Jacques Dextraze

    Jacques Alfed Dextraze (“Jadex”), CC, CCM, CBE, DSO and Bar, CD, businessman, soldier (born 15 August 1919 in Montreal, QC; died 10 May 1993 in Ottawa, ON). During the Second World War, Dextraze rose from private to lieutenant-colonel commanding an infantry battalion; he was decorated twice for bravery. He returned to civilian life after the war but was recalled for Korea, where he again commanded an infantry battalion. Dextraze remained in the army after the war and rose through the ranks to become chief of the defence staff from 1972 to 1977.

    Jacques Genest, CC, GOQ, FRSC, physician, medical researcher (born 29 May 1919 in Montreal, QC; died 5 January 2018 in Montreal). Dr. Genest founded the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (Montreal Clinical Research Institute) in 1967 and is recognized for advancing clinical research and education in Quebec and Canada.
