    Alex Alton (Primary Source)

    During the Second World War, Alex Alton served as a Canadian Army dispatch rider with The Highland Light Infantry of Canada Regiment, as the unit participated in the 1944 D-Day landings in Normandy and the Allied push through Northwest Europe that followed. While in Germany, Mr. Alton stepped on a landmine and thereafter lost one of his legs. He explains the role of dispatch riders and the landmine experience.     Alex Polowin (Primary Source)

    Alex Polowin was a Lithuanian-Jewish Canadian who served in the Royal Canadian Navy on HMCS Huron, a Tribal class destroyer. Polowin escorted convoys to Murmasnk to supply the Soviets, hunted down the battleship Scharnhorst, and supported the amphibious invasion of Normandy in 1944.     On a top secret mission, Alexander Burton and the other sailors aboard the cable ship CS John W Mackay spent three weeks stealing enemy communication cables laying on the bottom of the ocean. Despite operating in an area known for enemy submarine activity, the ship completed its task but Burton and his colleagues were unable to talk about their duties until after the war.Alexander Burton served in the navy during the Second World War.     Alexander Hall

    In 2009, The Memory Project interviewed Alexander Hall, a veteran of the Second World War. The following recording (and transcript) is an excerpt from this interview. Hall was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1921, and enlisted in the Royal Navy in January 1940 at the age of 19, receiving his training in England. He was soon promoted to the rank of leading seaman. In this testimony, Hall talks about some of his missions during the war, such as travelling to Russia, Halifax, and Norway. He describes his involvement in Operation Claymore, a joint British/Norwegian commando raid tasked with blowing up fish oil factories; they returned to England with volunteers for the “Free Norwegian Forces”. He also describes doing escort duty on a ship which sank in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as participating in the (aborted) commando raid of Bayonne. Hall immigrated to Canada in 1946.
