Six Students at Toronto All-Boys Catholic School Charged with Sexual Assault

Six members of the St. Michael’s College School football team — two aged 14 and four aged 15 — were arrested and charged with assault, gang sexual assault and sexual assault with a weapon after a video surfaced of them allegedly sexually assaulting another student with a broom handle. The school expelled eight students and suspended another in connection with the alleged assault and another incident involving hazing.

Students in St. Michael’s Sex Assault Case Get Two Years Probation

Three teenagers who were charged with assaulting and sexually assaulting two younger teammates on their school’s football team in the fall of 2018 were sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to the charges. Justice Brian Weagant called the three boys “excellent candidates for rehabilitation” and told them at the trial’s conclusion,  “When you encounter bullying or hazing again, I take you at your word that you will call it out to the perpetrators and your peers. Your message has to be: it is always wrong for older, stronger or more senior males to sexually humiliate, bully, or assault their more vulnerable colleagues, particularly when the behaviour masquerades under the guise of acceptable male sports culture.”

Hedley Lead Singer Jacob Hoggard Charged with Sexual Assault

Hoggard was arrested by Toronto Police and charged with two counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm and one count of sexual interference. The assault charges were related to three separate incidents involving a woman and a girl under 16, and are alleged to have occurred in 2016. The police also issued a news release saying they “are concerned there may be other victims.”    


#MeToo Movement in Canada

The #MeToo movement protesting sexual violence against women began in the United States in October 2017 in the wake of accusations against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein. Since then, it has rapidly expanded internationally through Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. In Canada, #MeToo and its French equivalent, #MoiAussi, have amplified the voices of victims and changed the conversation pertaining to rape, sexual abuse, sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence, harassment and misconduct.

Jagmeet Singh Reveals He Was Sexually Abused as a Child

In his memoir, Love & Courage, federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh discusses the racism and bullying he faced as a Sikh boy growing up in Canada, as well as the sexual abuse he endured at the hands of a tae kwon do instructor when he was around 10 years old. Singh said that not speaking publicly about the incident sooner was one of his “biggest regrets” and that he hoped going public with it now would help others with similar experiences.
