Tidnish

Tidnish, NS, Unincorporated Place. Tidnish is located on Northumberland Strait about 25 km northeast of Amherst, near the New Brunswick border. The name, derived from a Mi'kmaq word, probably means "a paddle." The community was to have been the eastern terminus of the Chignecto ship railway begun in the 1890s. The railway was never completed, and Tidnish missed out on the population and economic boost it would have experienced. The picturesque stone bridge of the ship railway still stands, a landmark of Cumberland County.

Tidnish once supported a flourishing if relatively small fishery, a small shipyard on the New Brunswick side of the community at Tidnish Bridge, and several sawmills. All of these industries have since failed and today Tidnish is principally a cottage area.
