Roxboro

Roxboro, Qué, Town, pop 5642 (2001c), 5785 A (1996c), 5879 (1991c), pop 6138 (1986c), area 2.22 km2, inc 1914, is located on the northwest bank of the Île de Montréal and is part of the Montréal Urban Community.

The town came into being after it separated from the municipality of the parish of Sainte-Geneviève de Pierrefonds and was incorporated as a separate municipality. At that time, a contractor for the Canadian Northern Québec Railroad Company began drilling a tunnel through Mount Royal from both sides at once. The drillers met in the middle and soon advertisements boasted of the pleasant areas available for residential construction, but growth did not occur until after WWII.

Today Roxboro is essentially a residential suburb of Montréal, and economic activity there is minimal since only 5% of the area is commercial. It has a newly modernized Canadian National railway station that serves as a commuting hub for Roxboro and the surrounding municipalities. Residents enjoy an impressive riverbank with mature trees stretching along the Rivière des Prairies. A small island on the river serves as a resting area for migratory birds in the spring and fall.
