The Rooms

The Rooms is a cultural centre located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, that showcases the history, heritage and art of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Opened in 2005, the building brought together the former Provincial Museum, Provincial Archives and Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador. With its three peaked red roofs, it is a striking feature of the St. John’s cityscape and the province’s largest public cultural space.

The Rooms contains permanent exhibits on the history of Newfoundland and Labrador’s fishing industry, archeology and ethnology, and flora and fauna. It also boasts strong collections related to Indigenous peoples, including material from the Innu, Mi’kmaq and Inuit, and archaeological material associated with the Beothuk, early Inuit (Thule), Palaeo-Inuit and Maritime Archaic cultures. Temporary exhibits present the province’s art, crafts and culture.

The Rooms operates three regional museums: the Mary March Provincial Museum in Grand Falls-Windsor, the Provincial Seamen’s Museum in Grand Bank, and the Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River. These are seasonal operations, while The Rooms is open year round.
