Performing Arts in Canada

Performing Arts in Canada. Illustrated quarterly founded in 1961 and published in Toronto at first by Performing Arts in Canada Publishing Co and after 1964 by Canadian Stage and Arts Publications Ltd. Its first issue appeared in March 1961; by 1990 more than 82,000 issues were circulated each year in Canada, the USA, and Europe.

George Hencz became president in 1969 and continued to hold that position in 1990. James C. McIntosh, Rolf Kalman, Stephen Mezei, Arnold Edinborough, Billyann Balay, Linda Kelley, Barbara Roscoe, Don Rooke, Mary Ann Pathy, Emslie Dick, Patricia Michael, and Sarah B. Hood have served as editors.

In the later 1980s the magazine's regular features included 'What's Going On,' a selected listing of concerts, theatre, dance, and other events across Canada, 'Potpourri,' which provided performing arts news in brief, and book and record reviews. The magazine offered interviews and articles on prominent musicians and stories on festivals and musical ensembles. Contributors have covered the creative and performance aspects of pop, folk, jazz, concert music, and opera, in addition to the other performing arts. In the 1980s between two and four issues per year have been published.
