Music at Conservatories and Academies

Conservatories and academies. A conservatory-type-school can be described as a not-for-profit institution for teaching music where individual instruction is the dominant method of teaching. They may be called conservatories, academies, community music schools, or other titles, and may be affiliated with or be part of a larger institution. Conservatories in Canada traditionally employ private teachers who teach on or off the premises and enjoy considerable independence. Student of any age may enrol. Some conservatories provide their own syllabus and examinations (although the teacher is not bound to use them); others will prepare students for external examinations administered by some other institution. A program usually culminates in a diploma for which the student must pass examinations in performance, theory, and history. Programs may also include student participation in ensembles, classes in history or theory, workshops, special courses using or teaching methods such as Kodály, Orff, or Suzuki, and summer courses.

In Quebec conservatoires are publicly funded, but in all other provinces financial assistance goes only to those affiliated with a university. The Association of Colleges and Conservatories of Music / Association des conservatoires et des collèges de la musique (ACCM) was formed in 1980. It held conferences in Toronto (1980), Banff (1981), and Montreal (1982) under president Ezra Schabas. It then disbanded for five years, but regrouped in 1987 under president Norman Burgess, and held a conference in Calgary that year and another in Toronto in 1989.
