Cain, Larry

Larry Cain, canoeist (b at Toronto 9 Jan 1963). He finished first in the C-1 canoe over 1000 m (time 4:35.1) and second over 500 m (2:01.7) at the Pan-American Championships in 1980 and in 1981 was the first Canadian canoeist in 46 years to win a world or Olympic event with 2 gold medals at the junior world championships. He competed in numerous international canoeing events through to 1984, in which he finished first in the C-1 1000 m and the C-1 500 m at the Nottinghamshire International Regatta. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics he won a gold medal (C-1 500 m, 1:57.01) and a silver (C-1 1000 m, 4:08.67).

In 1991 he began to concentrate in the C-2, or doubles, events, and with his partner David Frost made the finals in the 500 and 1000 m events at the 1992 Olympics, but failed to win a medal. Cain is a member of the Order of Canada.
