Joseph Umbrico

Joseph Umbrico. Trumpeter, teacher, b Thorold, Ont 26 Apr 1934, d Toronto 6 Jan 2007. Joseph Umbrico was a pupil of Samuel Krauss at the Curtis Institute, and became principal trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1957 and principal emeritus in 1983.

Joseph Umbrico. Trumpeter, teacher, b Thorold, Ont 26 Apr 1934, d Toronto 6 Jan 2007. Joseph Umbrico was a pupil of Samuel Krauss at the Curtis Institute, and became principal trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1957 and principal emeritus in 1983. He was also principal trumpet 1961-4 in the CBC Symphony Orchestra. Umbrico taught privately, and in 1979 joined the teaching staff of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Umbrico recorded a number of works by Canadian composers, such as Keith Bissell's Little Suite for Trumpet and Piano, John Hawkins' Remembrances, and John Weinzweig's Divertimento No. 5 for solo trumpet, trombone, and wind symphony. Joseph Umbrico's pupils included James Gardiner, Stuart Laughton, Bill Phillips, and James Spragg. He was married to the harpist Judy Loman.
