Joseph Mastrocola

Giuseppe "Joseph" Mastrocola, violinist, violist (born 19 December 1890 in Campobasso Province, Italy; died 9 October 1957 in Montreal, QC).

Mastrocola studied violin in Milan and emigrated to the USA at 16, staying in Rhode Island for seven months before settling ca 1908 in Montreal; there he played in theatre orchestras, in particular at the Capitol, where he also was assistant conductor. He was the viola 1922-38 in the Dubois String Quartet and a founder-member in 1930 of the Montreal Orchestra and of the SCSM (Montreal Symphony Orchestra) in 1934. He was associate principal viola of the MSO at the time of his death.
