Joseph Frederick Whiteaves, palaeontologist, zoologist (b at Oxford, Eng 26 Dec 1835; d at Ottawa 8 Aug 1909). Whiteaves visited Canada in 1861 and stayed permanently from 1862.

Joseph Frederick Whiteaves, palaeontologist, zoologist (b at Oxford, Eng 26 Dec 1835; d at Ottawa 8 Aug 1909). Whiteaves visited Canada in 1861 and stayed permanently from 1862. As museum curator and recording secretary of the Natural History Society of Montreal 1863-75, he studied modern freshwater and marine invertebrates and Ordovician fossils of the St Lawrence area of Québec. He joined the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CANADA in Montréal, becoming zoologist in 1883. Whiteaves published more than 100 papers on Canadian palaeontology and zoology, on Palaeozoic and Mesozoic fossils from NB, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and BC and on modern marine and nonmarine fauna from all areas of Canada. Whiteaves was an original Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1881).
