Joseph-Élie Savaria. Organist, teacher, b Lachine, near Montreal, 16 Dec 1886, d Montreal 4 Oct 1973; lauréat (AMQ) 1903. He studied piano, solfège, and harmony with Jean-Noël Charbonneau. He began studying organ ca 1903 with Alphonse Lavallée-Smith and was organist 1905?-ca 1920 at St-Charles Church and ca 1920-ca 1927 at Notre-Dame-du-Très-Saint-Sacrement Church, Montreal. He taught ca 1911-ca 1918 at the Collège St-Jérôme, and during 1912-13 undertook further training in Paris with Marcel Dupré, Louis Vierne, and Charles-Marie Widor. He taught organ at the Schola cantorum, organ and piano 1926-9 at the Séminaire de Joliette, and organ and piano at the Conservatoire national in Montreal, where he also was a director. He was regular organist 1927-66 at the Ascension of Our Lord Church in Westmount. In 1957 he received a medal from the diocesan commission for sacred music. Pierre Brabant and J.-Antonio Thompson were his pupils.
