Russell, John Hamilton Gordon

John Hamilton Gordon Russell, architect (b at Toronto 5 Nov 1862; d at Winnipeg 7 Feb 1946), a prominent member of the profession in Manitoba from 1894 until WWI. Apprenticed to H.B. Gordon and Helliwell at age 16, from 1886 Russell worked for offices in several western US cities. His major buildings included warehouses for J.H. Ashdown and several churches: Augustine (1903), Westminster (1909) and Knox (1913), in which he explored the possibilities of the Auditorium plan in Gothic Revival garb. His leadership within the profession is evidenced by being one of the founders of the Manitoba Association of Architects and first President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. For this he was eulogized by one of his colleagues as "our dean."
