Forty Mile, YT, is an abandoned settlement on the YUKON RIVER named for its distance from FORT RELIANCE. Gold was discovered in the area, and in 1887 A. Harper and L. McQuesten built a store at the mouth of Forty Mile River. William C. BOMPAS opened an Anglican mission the same year, and a rival store opened 1893. The 2 posts formed the nucleus of a thriving community which served several thousand miners until their exodus to the KLONDIKE in 1896.
