Angus McAskill, the Cape Breton giant (b at Harris, Scot 1825; d at Englishtown, NS 8 Aug 1863). The tallest nonpathological giant on record, at maturity he was 236 cm (7´9´) tall, weighed 193 kg (425 lbs) and had a shoulder width of 112 cm and palms measuring 20 cm by 30 cm. He was born a normal baby in the Scottish Hebrides and moved with his family to St Anns, NS. Though many stories about him are apocryphal, he is known to have possessed prodigious strength and reputedly could lift 635 litre barrels and beams as long as 18 m. Having joined a travelling show he toured Lower Canada, the US, the West Indies and Cuba 1849-53. He then returned to Cape Breton and engaged in business until his death, which was attributed to "brain fever."
