A. Cox & Co. Toronto music store and publishing firm, established by Arthur Cox and operated ca 1892 to ca 1931. Cox specialized in cheap editions of popular music. About half of his more than 150 publications are undated reprints of US and other music at that time unprotected by copyright in Canada. These range from 10-cent sheet music to collections such as Songs That Never Die, Easy Pieces in Easy Keys, and Old Favorite Songs. Cox' own copyrights include Robert Todd's translation of 'O Canada' (1909), H.H. Godfrey's 'Canada's Hymn of Empire' (1899), and N. Fraser Allan's 'Canada I Hear You Calling' (1916), and such albums as Songs of the British Empire (1909), Songs for the Little Folk (1910), and National Songs of All Nations (1914). Cox' publishing seems to have stopped after World War I, presumably because the copyright act of 1921 made this type of 'pirating' operation illegal.
