John Kinder Labatt, farmer, brewer (b at Mountmellick, Ire 1803; d at London, Canada W 26 Oct 1866). Descended from French Huguenot exiles who had become Anglican, he emigrated from Ireland to England and thence to Upper Canada in 1833 with his wife.

Israel Harold (Izzy) Asper, businessman, broadcaster, lawyer, politician (b at Minnedosa, Man 11 Aug 1932, d at Winnipeg, Man 7 Oct 2003). Izzy Asper earned a BA (1953) and LLB (1957) from the University of Manitoba before being called to the Bar in 1957.

Michael John O'Brien, railway builder, industrialist, philanthropist (b at Lochaber, NS 19 Sept 1851; d at Renfrew, Ont 26 Nov 1940). O'Brien left school while he was in grade 8 to work as a water boy on a railway construction site.

Lovell, John. Printer, publisher, b Bandon, County Cork, Ireland, 4 Aug 1810, d Montreal 1 Jul 1893. He arrived in Canada in 1820 and began his career as a printer in Montreal in 1835, concentrating on periodicals and newspapers.

John (Charles) Bird. Publisher, euphonium player, b Belgaum, India, 2 Nov 1923, d Toronto 26 Feb 2006. After World War II service as a euphonium player in the RCAF Band John Bird joined Gordon V. Thompson Ltd in 1946 and served as sales manager 1950-5 and general manager 1955-65.

Avie Bennett, businessman, publisher, philanthropist (born 2 Jan 1928 in Toronto, ON; died 2 June 2017 in Toronto, ON). Renowned for his interest in social and cultural issues, Avie Bennett began his business career in shopping centre development, a business that his family had pioneered.

Gooderham, Col Albert (Edward). Financier, patron, soldier, b Toronto 2 Jun 1861, d there 25 Apr 1935; honorary LL D (Toronto) 1924, appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) 1935 (but not invested).

Cyrus Stephen Eaton, financier, philanthropist (b at Pugwash, NS 27 Dec 1883; d at Cleveland, Ohio 9 May 1979). Educated at McMaster, Eaton moved to the US in 1900. He became involved in public utilities and after 1925 in steel, eventually forming Republic Steel.

Louis Rasminsky, banker (b at Montréal 1 Feb 1908; d at Ottawa 15 Sept 1998). Rasminsky played a major role in creating the post-WWII international monetary system.

James Purcell, stonemason, contractor, architect (b c1804; flourished 1841-58 at St John's, Nfld). Purcell was brought to Newfoundland in 1841 by the Roman Catholic bishop, Rev M.A. Fleming, to superintend the construction of the cathedral after a dispute with the original superintendent.

John Ross Robertson, newspaper publisher, philanthropist (b at Toronto 28 Dec 1841; d there 31 May 1918). He was the son of a Scottish-born merchant. After attending Toronto's Upper Canada College, where he published a student

Charles Fleetford Sise, businessman (b at Portsmouth, NH 27 Sept 1834; d at Montréal 9 Apr 1918). Before coming to Canada, Sise had careers as a sea captain, as owner of shipping businesses and as an insurance executive.

George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen, banker, railway president (b at Dufftown, Scot 5 June 1829; d at Hatfield, Eng 29 Nov 1921). Stephen has been described as the person most responsible for the success of the CANADIAN PACIFIC RY.

George Lawrence Stewart, business executive (b at Winnipeg 2 Dec 1890; d at Toronto 21 Mar 1985). Graduating in engineering from McGill in 1914, he served on McGill's engineering faculty for 2 years before joining Imperial Oil at its Sarnia, Ont, refinery as a draughtsman.
