Thomas Griffith Taylor, geographer, educator, explorer (b at Walthamstow, Eng 1 Dec 1880; d at Sydney, Australia 4 Nov 1963). A dynamic personality who did research on every continent, Taylor founded the first Canadian department of geography at U of T (1935).

Clayton Oscar Person, scientist, educator (b at Regina, Sask 16 May 1922; d at Vancouver, BC 1 Sept 1990). Educated at Saskatoon, Alberta and overseas, Person worked at U Man, U of A and UBC. He is recognized internationally as an authority on the genetics of host-parasite relations.

(Gilbert) Glen Harrison. Educator, choir conductor, tenor, b Winnipeg 3 Jun 1929; BA (Manitoba) 1950, AMM (Manitoba) 1960, M ED (Manitoba) 1973. His main teachers were Nina Dempsey and Ruby Moir.

Juliette Gaultier de la Vérendrye (b Gauthier). Mezzo-soprano, ethnomusicologist, violinist, b Ottawa 7 Aug 1888, d there 21 Aug 1972. She was a younger sister of Eva Gauthier, and her professional name was derived from that of her supposed forebears.

Robert Verebes, violist, teacher (born 15 November 1934 in Budapest, Hungary; died 12 April 2016 in Montréal, QC). Robert Verebes’s performances exhibited sophisticated musicianship and impassioned playing. After earning his artist diploma at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Verebes came to Canada and became a prominent member of the Montréal Symphony Orchestra for 40 years. He was also an acclaimed soloist and a founding member of the New Chamber Music Ensemble of Ottawa, the Musica Camerata Montréal and the Classical Quartet of Montréal. He taught chamber music at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal for 23 years and premiered several works commissioned for him, including Jean Coulthard’s Symphonic Ode and Lothar Klein’s Concerto Sacro.

Gustave (Adolphe Mathurin) Gagnon. Organist, teacher, composer, b Rivière-du-Loup-en-haut (now Louiseville), near Trois-Rivières, Que, 6 Nov 1842, d Quebec City 19 Nov 1930; honorary D MUS (Laval) 1922.

Giulio (Luigi) Masella. French hornist, teacher, b Montreal 8 Dec 1935; premier prix french horn (CMM) 1952. His brother Joseph and Harry Berv taught him at the CMM 1947-55. He was a member of the MSO 1954-82 and played regularly in CBC orchestras and ensembles 1965-82.

Roland Gagnier. Bassoonist, teacher, b Montreal 17 May 1905, d there 24 Jul 1975. He did all his studies under the direction of his father, Joseph.

Anthony (Charles) Genge. Composer, pianist, teacher, b Vancouver 22 May 1952; B MUS (Victoria) 1979, M MUS (McGill) 1981, PH D (State U of New York, Buffalo) 1985. He began to play jazz piano professionally as a teenager.

After a leave-taking recital, Fischer left for London to complete her training at the RCM 1919-22 with Cecilia M. Hutchinson.

Isabelle (Margaret) Mills. Educator, writer, conductor, b Fleming, Sask, near Brandon, Man, 3 Sep 1923; ARCT 1948, BA (Manitoba) 1964, MA (Columbia) 1965, ED D (Columbia) 1971. She studied in Brandon and summers (1947, 1949, and 1950) at the RCMT.

Max (Alfred Edward Maximilian) Bohrer. Pianist, teacher, b Montreal 25 Feb 1860, d there 24 Apr 1942. He was taught by his father, William Bohrer, and was auditioned by Anton Rubinstein during the latter's visit to Montreal in 1873.

Robin (Lawrence) Wood. Pianist, teacher, b Victoria, BC, 13 Oct 1924, d there 28 Feb 2004; LRSM 1943, FRAM, honorary LL D (Victoria) 1978. He studied in Victoria with Stanley Shale and continued 1943-6 at Victoria College and the University of British Columbia.

Gladys (Ellen) Willan (b Hall). Teacher, pianist, b London, England 19 Mar 1883, d Toronto 8 Dec 1964; LRAM 1902. At the Royal Academy of Music she studied piano with Francesco Berger and Tobias Matthay and voice with Walter Mackway.

Frank (Squire) Welsman. Conductor, teacher, pianist, b Toronto 20 Dec 1873, d at his summer home, Lake Joseph, Muskoka, Ont, 2 Jul 1952.

Sister Marie-Stéphane (b Hélène Côté). Teacher, composer, b St-Barthélémy, Que, 9 Jan 1888, d Montreal 9 Aug 1985; D MUS (Montreal) 1936. She began musical studies at five with her elder sister and continued them in her parish convent.

Robert Leroux. Percussionist, teacher, administrator, b Montreal 10 Dec 1950; B MUS (Montreal) 1970. He studied percussion at University of Montreal and McGill University and orchestral timpani repertoire with Louis Charbonneau.

Stanley McCartney. Clarinetist, teacher, b Vancouver 15 Mar 1930. He first studied clarinet in Vancouver with Bernard Temoin. He continued his studies in New York in 1953 with Daniel Bonade and later in Cleveland with Robert Marcellus.
