Magdeleine Martin. Pianist, teacher, b Montreal 28 Aug 1921. She studied piano with her sister Gilberte and organ and harmony with Georges-Émile Tanguay. In 1943 she was admitted to the CMM; her teachers there were Isidor Philipp (piano) and Joseph Bonnet (organ).

Frédéric Back, OC, CQ, animator, illustrator, muralist, teacher, activist (born 8 April 1924 in Sarrebrück, France; died 24 December 2013 in Montréal, QC). Frédéric Back was one of Canada’s most celebrated animators and a pioneering environmental activist.

Marie (Emma) Iösch-Lorcini (b Iösch, m Lorcini). Harpist, teacher, b Montreal 1 Jan 1930; premier prix harp (CMM) 1951. She is the daughter of the cellist Marthe Delcellier and the violinist Pierre Iösch, who were members of the Montreal Orchestra, the MSO, and the Little Symphony of Montreal.

Ronald St. John Macdonald, international jurist, teacher, (born at Montréal 20 Aug 1928; died at Halifax 7 Sept 2006). He was educated at St Francis Xavier U (BA, 1949), Dalhousie (LLB, 1952), London and Harvard (LLM, 1954-55).

George Bain, journalist, author, educator (b at Toronto 29 Jan 1920). Bain was educated in Toronto and served as a pilot in Bomber Command during WWII. In the mid-1950s, he began the Ottawa column in the Toronto Globe and Mail.

Alvaro Pierri. Guitarist, teacher, b Montevideo, Uruguay, 18 Jan 1953. Born into a family of musicians, he began studying piano at four with his mother, Ada Estades, and one year later he began taking guitar lessons with his aunt, Olga Pierri.

Frederic Hubert Soward, historian, educator (b at Minden, Ont 10 Apr 1899; d at Vancouver 1 Jan 1985). Educated at Toronto, Edinburgh and Oxford, he taught history at UBC 1922-64 (head of department, 1953-63).

Yvon Charbonneau, teacher, president of the Centrale de l'enseignement du Québec (CEQ) (b at Mont-Laurier, Qué 11 July 1940). After studying at Université de Montréal, Charbonneau taught French and the humanities in Québec and Tunisia in 1961-69.

Robert Edward Bell, nuclear physicist, university educator (b at New Malden, Eng 29 Nov 1918; d at Vancouver, BC 1 Apr 1992). After graduating from the University of British Columbia (BA 1939, MA 1941), he worked on RADAR development at the NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL during WWII.

John Bland, emeritus professor of architecture at McGill, distinguished architect, town planner, architectural historian and author as well as one of the foremost educators of architects in Canada (b at Lachine, Qué 13 Nov 1911; d in Montreal March 26, 2002).
