Jacques Lavigne, philosopher (b 1919-d 1999). Educated at Montréal's Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and the U de Montréal, he was primarily a professor in the Faculty of Social Science (chair of philosophy and political theory), then in the Philosophy Department.

Richard Frank Salisbury, anthropologist (b at Chelsea, Eng 8 Dec 1926, d at Montréal, Qué 17 Jun 1989). Educated at Cambridge, Harvard and Australian National University, Salisbury was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1974 for his contributions to Canadian anthropology.

(Joseph Charles) Marc Bélanger. Violinist, violist, arranger, composer, teacher, b Quebec City 30 Jul 1940; premier prix harmony, chamber music (CMQ) 1960. He began violin lessons with his father, Edwin Bélanger, at six, and studied 1948-61 at the CMQ with Claude Létourneau and Calvin Sieb.

Rudolf Komorous, composer, bassoonist, teacher (b at Prague 8 Dec 1931, naturalized Canadian 1974). Komorous studied bassoon in Prague, at the State Conservatory (1952-56) and with Karel Pivonka at the Academy of Musical Arts (1952-56).

Ron (Ronald William) Collier. Composer, arranger, conductor, trombonist, teacher, b Coleman, near Lethbridge, Alta, 3 Jul 1930, d Toronto 22 Oct 2003. Ron Collier received his early training 1943-50 in Vancouver, where he played trombone in the Kitsilano Boys' Band.

Robert Kroetsch, writer, editor, teacher (born at Heisler, Alta 26 Jun 1927, died at Edmonton, 21 Jun 2011). Kroetsch grew up on his father's farm and studied at the University of Alberta and the University of Iowa.

Robert Weisz. Pianist, teacher, b Arad, Rumania, 25 Jun 1925, of Hungarian parents, naturalized Swiss 1963 and Canadian 1975; prix de virtuosité (Geneva Cons) 1949.

Loring Woart Bailey, geologist, educator (b at West Point, NY 28 Sept 1839; d at Fredericton 10 Jan 1925). Son of a professor at the US Military Academy, Bailey was educated at Harvard and Brown and knew many important scientists.

Mary Ann (Elizabeth) Parker. Musicologist, teacher, b Toronto 21 Nov 1951; ARCT piano (1971), BA (Toronto) 1972, M MUS (Southern Illinois) 1976, PH D musicology (ESM, Rochester) 1982. Her PH D thesis, completed under the supervision of Alfred Mann, was on 'Handel's Latin Psalm settings.
