In 1948 he entered national politics as party leader, but he failed in 2 elections to mount an effective challenge to the Liberal administration. He resigned as leader 1956 and was appointed Canadian high commissioner to London, England, in 1957 - the last distinction in a noteworthy public career.

Alexander Edmund Batson Davie, lawyer, politician, premier of British Columbia 1887-89 (b at Wells, Eng 24 Nov 1847; d at Victoria 1 Aug 1889). He immigrated to Vancouver Island in 1862 and was the first person to receive a complete legal education there, being called to the bar in 1873.

Herbert James Palmer, lawyer, politician, premier of PEI (b at Charlottetown 26 Aug 1851; d there 22 Dec 1939); son of Edward PALMER. Called to the bar in 1876, appointed Queen's Counsel in 1878, Palmer was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1900.

Hugh John Flemming, lumberman, politician, premier of NB (b at Peel, NB 5 Jan 1899; d at Fredericton 16 Oct 1982). Elected in 1921 as a municipal councillor for Carleton, Flemming became Conservative Member of Legislative Assembly for Carleton in 1944.

Douglas Lloyd Campbell, politician, premier of Manitoba 1948-58 (b at Portage la Prairie, Man 27 May 1895). D.L. Campbell won election to the Manitoba legislature in 1922 as a Farmers' candidate in Lakeside riding, which he represented for 47 years.

Harlan Carey Brewster, politician, premier of British Columbia 1916-18 (b at Harvey, NB 10 Nov 1870; d at Calgary 1 Mar 1918). Educated in New Brunswick and Boston, Massachusetts, and qualified as a printer and deep-sea navigator, Brewster moved to BC about 1893.

William Bennett Campbell, teacher, politician, premier of PEI (born 27 Aug 1943 in Montague, PEI; died 11 September 2008 in Cardigan, PEI). Campbell succeeded Alexander Campbell (no relation) as leader of the Liberal Party and premier of the province in 1978, but his caretaker government was defeated by the PCs in the 1979 election.

Gordon Daniel Conant, lawyer, Liberal politician, premier of Ontario (b near Oshawa, Ont 11 Jan 1885; d at Oshawa 2 Jan 1953). From 1937 the capable, faithful attorney general in the Ontario government of Mitchell HEPBURN, he inherited the premiership from his leader in October 1942.

Alexander Bradshaw Campbell, lawyer, politician, premier of PEI 1966-78 (b at Summerside, PEI 1 Dec 1933). In 1966 Campbell became one of the youngest (age 33) premiers ever elected.

Ghiz was elected president of the PEI Liberals in 1977 and became their leader in 1981. His inexperience was a factor in the Liberals' unsuccessful bid for power in the 1982 election.
